Police officers are investigating a train crash that killed a man Tuesday night in Durham.
According to the Durham Police Department, the crash happened around 5:39 p.m. when a train was traveling east and hit a man identified as Dashiell Warren, 27, of Chapel Hill, who was walking in its path. The train engineer blew the horn to alert the man, but the man did not stop and was hit by the train.

The man died at the scene.
Police closed two different intersections while they investigated the crash:
- Ninth Street at West Main Street.
- Swift Avenue at West Pettigrew Street.
Both intersections have since reopened.
According to police, the man was wearing headphones when he was hit by the train. A UNC Wilmington student was killed in August in Clayton after she was struck by a train while she was wearing headphones.
This is the fourth incident involving a train crash in 2025 in the Bull City. In January, a pedestrian was hospitalized with serious injuries after they were hit by a train. Then in March and May, two cars were hit by a train in downtown.

The crashes prompted city leaders to look for solutions. A WRAL News report from June 2024 reported there had been at least 19 crashes in a 25-year span. Since November 2023, there's been eight reported incidents, not all of which happened at crossings.
