FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Gray's Creek Elementary School Principal Cal Violette has been selected as the 2011 Wachovia Principal of the Year for Cumberland County Schools.

Violette has served as a school administrator for 15 years. He started his 27-year career in education after receiving a bachelor's degree in K-12 health and physical education from Methodist University. In 1995, he earned a master's degree in education administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

As an instructional leader, Violette challenges himself each day to be an exemplary leader who “constantly challenges my outstanding staff to reflect on their practices and beliefs and to believe that where better is possible, good is not enough.”

As the principal of the year, Violette will receive $3,000 for his school and $3,000 for his personal use.

Violette will face other local award recipients from the Sandhills/South Central Region of the state in the Wachovia Principal of the Year competition. Regional winners will be selected in February, and the state winner will be named in April.
