RALEIGH, N.C. — Mayor Charles Meeker will be joined by "a cast of characters" at noon Wednesday to give people "a tantalizing taste of the fun" that will be had downtown at Raleigh Wide Open 5, which will be held July 31 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to city officials.

RWO5 is the city's annual celebration of all things downtown.

Part of the press conference will include the Raleigh Preliminary RWO5 ice-cream eating contest. The first of eight contestants to eat three pints of chocolate ice cream will hoist the trophy as Raleigh’s confectioner extraordinaire.

"But much more important, the ice cream king (or queen) will represent the Capital City in the Triangle take down that will pit the ice-cream eating champions of Durham and Cary against Raleigh’s champion," according to Raleigh officials. "This comes down at 5 p.m., July 31, as part of RWO5."
