Durham, N.C. — John A. Forlines Jr. a 1939 Duke graduate who served as a trustee and president of the alumni association, died on Tuesday, the university announced. He was 92.
In 2008, Forlines received Duke’s highest honor, the University Medal for Distinguished Meritorious Service. He was also a member of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
“We will miss his passion, good humor and wise counsel. We also know that Duke is a far better place because John was here," said Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead in a statement.
Forlines was president of the DAA from 1970 to 1971 and served on the university Board of Trustees from 1974 to 1990.
In addition to his work with Duke, Forlines managed the Bank of Granite in Granite Falls, N.C., and chaired the North Carolina Community College board and the board of Caldwell County Community College and Technical Institute.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home, 725 Wilkesboro Blvd. NE, in Lenoir. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 1002 Kirkwood St., Lenoir.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Caldwell County Hospice and Palliative Care (902 Kirkwood, Lenoir NC, 28645), and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (The Foundation of CCCTI, P.O. Box 600, Lenoir NC, 28645).
