RALEIGH, N.C. — WRAL-TV and its parent company, Capitol Broadcasting Co., are continuing their longstanding tradition of giving away azaleas to the community.
This year marks the 24th annual Azalea Celebration.

Each October, Capitol Broadcasting gives away more than 10,000 azaleas to more than 100 nonprofit groups across the state to use to beautify their properties.

Organizations must complete an application and submit ideas for how they could use azaleas to improve their properties' appearance.

Information on how to apply is available on the WRAL Azalea Gardens Web site. The application deadline is Sept. 9, and those chosen will receive their plants on Oct. 3.

Jim Goodmon, president and chief executive officer of Capitol Broadcasting, started the azalea celebration in 1985 to "establish a continuous, well-maintained project for their community to enjoy and emulate."

WRAL-TV, WRAL-FM MIX 101.5 and North Carolina Beautiful sponsor the event.
