Area colleges hold commencement

NCCU, Campbell, Mount Olive and UNC-Chapel Hill have winter graduation ceremonies this weekend.

A number of college students turn tassels this weekend.

North Carolina Central will host winter commencement exercises Saturday. More than 500 graduates are scheduled to participate. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.

Campbell University graduates will get their diplomas on Saturday as well. The ceremony is at 10 a.m. in the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.

Mount Olive College students also graduate on Saturday. Commencement is at 2 p.m. in the Kornegay Arena. This will be a particularly memorable ceremony for a Pitt County mother and son. Melva and Kevin Green will graduate together!

Winter commencement at UNC-Chapel Hill is on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Dean Smith Center. The speaker is Valerie Ashby, an award-winning chemistry professor.
