Raleigh, N.C. — Blood donations typically drop just before and after the holidays. To combat that, the Red Cross held Thanks for Giving Blood Drives this weekend.
For every person who donated blood during the drive, Food Lion donated food to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The drive was sponsored by the Triangle chapter of the American Red Cross.
The North Raleigh Blood Center is located at 8301 Bandford Way. The Durham Blood Center is at 4737 University Drive.
This weekend, officials said 179 units of blood were donated at the Durham and Raleigh locations and approximately 150 people turned out for the drives.
Each day, the American Red Cross must provide more than 1,600 units of blood to meet the needs of area patients.
Every donor received an American Red Cross gift and was entered into drawing for prizes, including movie, symphony and theater tickets. Blood donors also had the opportunity to win one of three $1,000 gift cards.
