RALEIGH, N.C. — Two statues outside the State Capitol are being refurbished this week by a South Dakota conservancy group.

The Borglum Historical Center specializes in preserving statues created by Gutzon Borglum, a sculptor most known for his creation of the presidential busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt on Mount Rushmore.

The group planned to make plaster molds of the Gov. Charles Aycock and Henry Lawson Wyatt statues on Capitol Square. Wyatt was an Edgecombe County soldier who was the first casualty of the Civil War.

After the casts are made, the preservationists plan to clean and restore the two statues.
