Barefoot first worked for the department in a part-time summer position in 1975. He served stints in the recreation departments of Harnett County and Wake Forest before returning to his hometown in 1983.

Barefoot cites among his accomplishments the establishment of recreation centers on school property and the renovation of Clark Park and Nature Center.

City Manager Dale Iman said, "Throughout his career he has been dedicated and fully committed to the goal of improving the parks and recreational opportunities for the residents of Fayetteville."

Barefoot plans to remain in Fayetteville, enjoying the community and his family in his retirement.
