Construction began Monday on a new, five-story patient tower at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.

The hospital, formerly known as Johnston Memorial Hospital, will spend about $75 million on upgrades to patient facilities. <br />

According to plans, the new tower will have suites for overnight visitors and a 24-hour food and service room.
