The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced a new batch of self-service kiosks on Monday across grocery stores in Raleigh, Apex, Wake Forest and Fayetteville.

NCDMV commissioner Paul Tine announced 10 new locations, bringing the state to a total of 20 kiosks across three counties -- Wake, Cumberland and Mecklenburg -- in Harris Teeter, Publix and Carlie C's stores.

The NCDMV Express kiosks were first unveiled in 2024 at three Harris Teeter locations in Raleigh, Fayetteville and Charlotte. Six additional kiosks were added the same year, expanding locations in Raleigh and adding kiosks in Cary and Fuquay-Varina.

Monday's announcement adds five new kiosks in the Charlotte area, two new kiosks in the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg area and three new kiosks in Raleigh, Apex and Wake Forest.

Limited services available at self-serve kiosks

Customers can complete the following services at the kiosks:

  • Renew a driver license or ID card (unless they renewed online last time)
    • Order a duplicate or change the address on their driver license, permit or state ID card (you must know your driver license/ID number to complete this transaction)
      • Register to vote
        • Pay property tax on a new vehicle
          • ​​Renew vehicle registration and print license plate sticker and registration card

            Customers must visit an office in person for certain services, including getting a REAL ID or getting their first license, changing their name, or applying for a new title.

            DMV adding more online transactions

            The new kiosks come as the NCDMV struggles with complaints, from difficulty scheduling appointments to long wait times at driver license offices.

            Tine spoke about those wait times on Monday, saying the NCDMV has improved its average wait time to under 40 minutes, adding "it's not a single thing that is going to fix us."

            The NCDMV is working to improve the customer experience by updating its technology and adding 64 additional employees in recent months.

            A big push is moving transactions that could previously only be done in person to online.

            According to Tine, about 400,000 online transactions have replaced services that customers would have formerly had to do in person, and there have been 90,000 transactions at the kiosks since the program launched.

            Every two out of three renewals can now be done online, he said.

            "The more we can do to meet the customer where they are instead of making the customer come to us ... we're going to concentrate on that," Tine said.

            There is a $4.95 fee per transaction to use the kiosks, plus a 2% card processing fee.
