Authorities in North Carolina are investigating after a man was shot during an encounter with a police officer. 

Warrenton police say officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving an assault near the Bragging Rooster Bar in the downtown area. As officers arrived, they found a person with a firearm in the backseat of a vehicle.

Investigators said a gun was fired during a brief interaction between an officer and the armed person, who was struck in the thigh as a result. The person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. 

The officer involved did not discharge a weapon but will be placed on leave as standard protocol, according to officials. The officer will be relieved from all assigned duties pending an independent investigation. 

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case.
