NC Central making changes to homecoming a year after four people were shot during festivities

North Carolina Central University on Thursday announced it would be making changes to its annual homecoming celebration, just one year after four people were shot during the school’s homecoming.

N.C. Central's homecoming starts on Oct. 17 and lasts through Oct. 25, when the Eagles play Delaware State.

Among the changes that the university is making is that no visitors will be able to park on campus. On-campus parking will be reserved for faculty, staff and students at the university.

The university said parking will be available at Durham Station and Durham Tech, with a shuttle service for visitors to the campus.

Additionally, all celebrations will end by 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and the campus will close by 7 p.m., with shuttle and bus services ending by 8 p.m.

The changes come after four people were shot in two unrelated shootings during the school’s homecoming celebrations on Oct. 26 on its campus last year.

The four people, including an NCCU student, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after they were shot near the Student Services Building on Eagle Campus Drive.

The campus was placed on lockdown, and two people, including an assistant professor at the university, were charged in connection with the shootings. Many students told WRAL News they felt the university properly communicated with them during the lockdown.
