WASHINGTON, N.C. - The Inner Banks STEM Center held a grand opening ceremony on Thursday at their new 13,000 square foot facility at the Washington-Warren Airport.
The center will provide science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs to at-risk and under-represented middle and high school students, in an effort to prepare them for higher educational opportunities in the future.
"Today is a big day because this is a footprint of the education system that we need in northeast North Carolina, to bring the children's skills up to grade," said State Representative Keith Kidwell.
The North Carolina State Legislature provided $800,000 for the project, and a grant of $163,000 was given by the Golden Lead Foundation to fund the center.
Construction is underway and the facility plans to open in November.
