Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate inside the Granville County jail on Wednesday morning.

Oxford Police Department arrested a 49-year-old man for felony possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance late Tuesday. He was taken into custody at the Granville County Detention center.

After a few hours, detention staff conducted routine security checks. Workers later found the man unresponsive in a housing unit around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Granville Sheriff's department. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until next of kin is notified.  

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the death investigation, which is standard procedure after an inmate dies in custody.
