Firefighters found one person dead as they responded to a fire at a home on Redbud Road in Chapel Hill.

The fire began just before 7 a.m. at a home close to Erwin and Weaver Dairy roads.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived by 8:15 a.m. Dozens of firefighters were on scene, along with an ambulance, and neighbors were watching the large response. 

At 8:30 a.m., it appeared the fire response was wrapping up. Chapel Hill police officers were involved in the investigation.

At 9:30 a.m., investigators said they found one person dead inside the home.

Neighbors told WRAL News a woman lives in the house, and they saw thick smoke.

"A medical examiner will work to determine the victim’s identity and cause of death. Chapel Hill Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire," Chapel Hill Fire Rescue said.
