Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin announced Thursday he won’t seek reelection, according to a news release from Charlotte-based public relations firm the LEPR Agency.
Colvin, who has served as Fayetteville’s mayor since 2017, was up for reelection in the fall.

“While we’ve accomplished and grown the city so much during my time as mayor, for everything there is a season,” Colvin said in part in the release. “As I look to the future, I plan to continue working to make Fayetteville a better place by contributing to the community, but I’m also looking forward to spending time with my family and working in my business.
Colvin thanked his family and the community for their support in the release.
“It has truly been the honor of my life to serve as mayor of this wonderful city, and I’m incredibly grateful for your support over the years,” Colvin said.
Before becoming mayor, Colvin served two consecutive terms on the Fayetteville City Council from 2013 to 2017.
“It’s crucial for our community to keep making strategic decisions and investments that secure the bright future we all envision for Fayetteville,” Colvin said. “I will continue to be a champion for Innovation Districts and positioning our community for the future, including investing in infrastructure to grow the city, reducing poverty and homelessness, increasing housing affordability and investing in our streets, sidewalks and stormwater systems.”
It is unclear whether Colvin, a Democrat, will seek office in another level of government.
In the past few months, Colvin has advocated for and implemented a youth curfew in Fayetteville after several shootings in the city. Specifically, the youth curfew applies to people 16 years old and younger from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day. While the youth curfew took effect on May 27, enforcement of it is due to start on July 9.
The filing period for Fayetteville’s nonpartisan mayoral race is from noon July 7 to noon July 18. The primary election is scheduled for Oct. 7, and the general election is Nov. 4.
