Two people dead after separate crashes Monday in Fayetteville

Two residents are dead Tuesday in Fayetteville after two separate crashes the day before, one of which involved a moped.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers responded to a moped crash around 7 p.m. Monday at the Hope Mills Road and Poplar Drive intersection.

Officers told WRAL that the driver of the moped died at the scene of the crash and the driver who hit the moped remained at the scene.

Elsewhere in Fayetteville, officers responded to a crash around 9:08 p.m. on Monday at the Raeford Road at Pinewood Terrace intersection.

According to police, a driver hit a pedestrian. EMS took the pedestrian to the hospital, where they later died.

Residents told WRAL News Raeford Road can be difficult to cross, even in broad daylight. According to police, the victim was trying to cross six lanes of traffic. The speed limit on Raeford Road is 55 mph.

"To be walking across the roadway, yes, we recommend using crosswalks or well-lit intersections," Corwin Lewis with the Fayetteville Police Department said. "Try not to cross in non-lit areas, like that one."

Less than a week before the crashes, Fayetteville leaders held workshops aimed at making the city more pedestrian friendly.

It's an issue leaders have been trying to solve for years. Since 2018, the city has spent about $13 million to improve sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals and trail ways.

"There maybe some areas where people may not feel 100% comfortable, so we'd like to know whare that is so we can go in and make an assessment to see what can be done about making it more walkable," said Virginia Small, Fayetteville's transportation planner.

Police told WRAL News they are withholding the identities of the victims of both crashes until they can notify their family members.

Police said both investigations are ongoing.
