Ft. Bragg soldier, Ukrainian refugee ID'd as victims in Moore County Valentine's Day murders

The victims of a double homicide on Valentine's Day in Moore County were identified on Sunday by deputies with the sheriff's office.

According to the Moore County Sheriff's Office, around 7:45 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a shooting at a home on Daphne Lane in Vass.

When deputies arrived, they found a man and a woman dead inside the home. The sheriff's office identified the victims as 21-year-old Kateryna Tovmash of Vass and 28-year-old Matthew Wade.

Wade was a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, according to the sheriff's office. Wade's family members told WRAL News that Tovmash was a Ukrainian refugee who had recently moved to Vass.

"[Matt] always dreamed of joining the military," said Megan Wade, Matthew's sister. "He was so excited to go to Italy this year."

Deputies said the suspect, 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh, fled the area before law enforcement arrived in the Woodlake community neighborhood. While the sheriff's office said Tovnash and Fosnaugh had been in a previous relationship in Ohio, they had not determined a clear motive in the case.

According to Wade's sisters, Wade and Tovmash had recently became a couple and were living together while he was stationed at Fort Bragg. His sisters said they will remember him as a the funniest person they've ever known as they processed their shock.

"He loved making people laugh, and he was very good at it," Courtney Miller said.

Investigators say units were notified right away to be on the lookout for Fosnaugh, who they anticipated was fleeing to his hometown in Ohio.

Deputies said that Fosnaugh was found and arrested by local authorities in Coshocton, Ohio, which is about seven hours away from North Carolina. 

"We are grateful for the swift coordination and assistance from our law enforcement partners in bringing this individual into custody," Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields said in a statement.

Fosnaugh was charged with breaking and entering and two counts of murder in connection with the shooting. It is unclear when Fosnaugh will be brought back to North Carolina to face those charges.
