The collision of a concrete mixer truck and minivan in Erwin Friday afternoon claimed the lives of one man and his 5-week-old passenger.
Just after 1 p.m., State Highway Patrol responded to a two-car crash near Erwin. Sky 5 flew over the scene along U.S. Highway 421 at Prospect Church Road around 2 p.m.

In their initial investigation, SHP determined that a Dodge Journey was traveling south on Prospect Church Road and a concrete mixer truck was traveling west on US-421.
The Dodge failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and drove directly into the path of the concrete mixer truck. Both vehicles collided into each other, the crash blocking the majority of the road.
The driver of the Dodge and a 5-week-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Dodge, a woman and a 2-year-old girl, were taken to WakeMed with minor injuries.
The 84-year-old driver of the concrete mixer truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
SHP said charges will not be filed at this time.
