Human remains found in Edgecombe County

Edgecombe County deputies are working to determine how human skeletal remains ended up along a busy road near Conetoe on Thursday morning.

Investigators responded to the discovery more than 12 hours earlier on US-64 ALT route.

The scene remained active overnight as deputies searched for evidence.

Earlier this month, a man’s body was found a short distance away from the same area. Those remains were later identified as Kenneth Earl Wooten of Pinetops. Jessie Cherry was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to Wooten's death. 

Authorities have not said if the two incidents are related.

This is an ongoing investigation.
