Fight between more than a dozen people on Durham high school's campus didn't involve students

The Durham County Sheriff's Office responded to a fight involving more than a dozen people at a magnet high school Tuesday morning. The Southern School of Energy and Sustainability campus was put on a brief hold, but was not put on lockdown, according to officials. 

Crystal Roberts, a spokesperson with Durham Public Schools, said there were no reports of a shooting. Initially, before noon, Roberts said the fight was between a group of people who were not students at the school, nor were they inside the building. 

However, there are videos circulating on social media that show a big fight in the hallway at the school. WRAL is working to verify those videos. 

According to officers speaking on scanner traffic, initial 911 calls said there were sounds of gunshots, but the student resource officer on campus said there were no shots fired. 

The sheriff's office said a deputy used a Taser to physically separate some of the people involved in the fight, but that no one was injured.

The school was put on a 20-minute hold -- keeping students indoors while classes continued. The hold is different from a lockdown. 

DPS clarified that "hold" is called to keep students and staff inside classrooms to de-escalate events such as large fights to ensure safety until an "all clear" is announced. A "lockdown" means to lock down individual rooms and stay out of sight to protect against a direct, active threat and to secure individual spaces.

WRAL News is working to learn more about who was involved in the fight, and if any criminal charges will be filed.

On Wednesday, WRAL News asked the Durham County Sheriff's Office if anyone was hit. The sheriff's office didn't answer as of Wednesday evening.

WRAL News also asked Durham Public Schools if the fight happened inside or outside the  Southern School of Energy and Sustainability. The school district referred WRAL News to the sheriff's office.
