Two dead and one injured in Durham hours after leaders discuss violence plan

Durham police are investigating a shooting that left two men dead and a woman injured. 

Officers were called to reports of a shooting around midnight on North Roxboro Street near Old Oxford Road. When they arrived, they found three individuals inside a vehicle who had been shot.

Two adult males died at the scene, and the woman was taken to a local hospital. She is expected to be OK.

This happened just hours after city and county leaders met to create a plan to reduce gun violence. The conversations are the first part of a three-phase violence reduction plan. 

Just this year, Durham leaders reported that violent crime dropped nearly 17% in 2025, though some residents say more work needs to be done. 

Renee Johnson has lived in Durham for the past three years and is concerned with the level of violence in the city.

"You hear a lot of shootings with the youth involved, and I think there needs to be more programs for mentoring youth," Johnson said, adding she believes it is a community effort to keep the city safe.

She said her church has started a youth mentorship program aimed at addressing bullying and violence. 

"I think it's a community effort, that different churches, different programs need to get together," Johnson continued. "You can't complain about the problem if you aren't part of the solution."
