Police said 30-year-old Irease Jeffrey was driving the Chevy Malibu when he then lost control of the car before coming to a stop in a nearby parking lot. Jeffrey was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police said a woman was also in the car at the time of the shooting. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved. No other injuries were reported. Police has not provided any details about leads on suspects or if the reported shooter and victims knew each other.

A family friend of Jeffrey provided photos of him to WRAL News, adding that he was an aspiring rapper, known as "Billy Resio" in the music community, who had just signed a record deal.

"He was just a natural, like he was born to do it," said Michael Mitchell. "Wish I could have saved him because we had talked about him moving out of Durham and coming down here to Miami."

Mitchell added that he believes Jeffrey's music would have taken off if he'd gotten a chance to make more of it.

"Durham is too small for all this violence," Mitchell said. "It's a waste."

Mitchell said Jeffrey leaves behind a one-year-old son.

"[He] wanted to be to his son what his father was to him," Mitchell said.
