One person died in a crash on Wednesday morning in Durham, just minutes into the new year.

A stretch of South Alston Avenue between Majestic Drive and Gilmore Avenue was shut down when the driver of a Honda Accord ran off the road around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said driver Isaiah Thompson lost control of the car and hit a utility pole, causing power lines to come down near the roadway.

Passenger Agneris Rodriguez was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and impairment were factors in the crash.

Thompson was charged with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle, driving while license revoked and reckless driving.
