2 Dunn teens hospitalized after the mother of one throws scorching liquid on them

Two teens in Dunn are recovering after someone threw a scorching liquid on them.

Larry McDougald is the uncle of a 15-year-old boy who got burned. McDougald said he was watching football Sunday afternoon when he heard yelling outside of his apartment complex on Ponderosa Drive.

“This turned into something I have never seen before in my life,” McDougald said.

McDougald said an argument may have been over a phone.

“You can’t hear too much, see too much when you have 40 people around the whole step,” McDougald said. “[People were] trying to escalate by throwing stuff through the windows.”

On Monday afternoon, shards of broken window were still in the grass.

When McDougald went to get someone to help break up the fight on Sunday, he came back to find his 15-year-old nephew in pain.

“When I got back there, I [saw] my little nephew hollering and screaming,” McDougald said. “He got burned [really badly] across the chest.”

Dunn police said someone threw hot liquid on the teens. The liquid was not just water, police said. Neighbors and McDougald said they believe it was hot water mixed with bleach.

While the 15-year-old boy was released from the hospital, a 14-year-old girl was also burned and remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, the Dunn Police Department said they issued arrest warrants for Kendra Lafaye McDougald, who is the mother of one of the victims.

Police said they believe she is responsible for causing the teens' injuries and charged her with two counts of felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury, two counts of assault by throwing acid or alkali and one count of felony child abuse.

Larry McDougald said he thinks the incident should have never happened.

“We need to pass things up and let them go before it escalates any worse,” McDougald said. “This is my family. I don’t want nobody hurt, period.”
