A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with domestic violence-related crimes.
The State Bureau of Investigation charged Mark Steven Melvin with misdemeanor domestic violence, assault inflicting serious injury and assault on a female. Melvin was placed on administrative duty on May 7.

According to the arrest warrant, Melvin used physical force against his girlfriend at the time of April 2025.
He forcefully removed her phone from her hand in a "twisting motion," causing serious injury to her left ring finger that required her to get surgery.
"We are aware of these charges and are investigating the matter appropriately," Sgt. Chris Knox said in a statement.
In a post on Facebook, the woman said she experienced months of torment while dating Melvin. She said there were multiple instances over the last six months she was physically harmed.
She wrote, “I wish I would have known six months ago that he didn’t want me telling the truth about who he is just to protect his reputation/career.”
She said it was something she didn’t want to speak up about until now because she, “Believed he would never hurt me again.”
“Don't stay once it gets violent like I did,” she wrote.
On Thursday, WRAL News tried calling Melvin and his attorney but we did not hear back from either of them.
In 2021, Melvin was placed under investigation after he called the Black Lives Matter movement a “racist money laundering hate group” in a Facebook post.
Melvin has been part of the Highway Patrol for more than 10 years and commonly patrols the Person County area.
