17-year-old shot before crashing into cars at Sanford apartment complex dies, police say

A 17-year-old died Wednesday following a shooting and crash at an apartment complex in Sanford.

According to Sanford police, officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to the Oak Branch apartment complex on Oak Branch Lane off U.S. 1 in Sanford. They found the teenager with gunshot wounds and several wrecked cars.

Investigators said the teen crashed into the parked cars after he was shot. Among the cars was a Lee County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

The teen died on the way to the hospital, police said.

No arrests were announced. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sanford Police Department at 919-775-8268.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was there as four cars were towed away from the scene.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle had severe damage to its front and tire.

Police were talking to neighbors, and a portion of the area was blocked off with yellow tape. It appeared there were tire marks and oil in the parking lot.
