Cornelius police officer hit, killed while on bike ride with wife, department says

The Cornelius Police Department is mourning the death of one of its officers, WCNC Charlotte reports.

The department said Officer Gabriel Stainback was riding his bike with his wife in Concord Saturday afternoon when a vehicle hit him. He was newly married and sworn into service in December 2024 after being hired as a cadet through the Basic Law Enforcement Training program.

"Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family. Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy," the department said in a Facebook post.
