A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested after shots were fired near Carrboro High School on Tuesday.

Those at school heard gunshots, initiating a lockdown at the school Tuesday.

Carrboro police said a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were charged with felony possession of a handgun with an altered serial number and misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor. The 16-year-old is a CHS student.

Police were on scene and all staff and students were indoors during the course of the lockdown. School leaders later moved the status to secure mode, where the school day continues as scheduled with everyone inside. The all-clear was eventually given around 1:30 p.m.

The juveniles' names were not released.

Officers said the shooting occurred in the woods next to apartments located near the CHS campus.  The School Resource Officer heard a series of shots coming from the apartment community next to the school.

The school said some students who were outside eating lunch left campus when they heard shots.

Officers arrived sometime around noon. No one associated with the school is hurt.

Nearby, Culbreth Middle School and Frank Porter Graham Elementary School were also placed on secure mode.

Sky 5 flew over the school as emergency teams responded.

On Tuesday evening, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Superintendent Rodney Trice released a statement on Facebook. Trice thanked the school staff who helped keep students safe.

"I also share this message to express appreciation," Trice wrote. "I’d like to recognize Interim Principal Dr. Diego Mureño and the Carrboro High School administrative team.

"I am also grateful for our staff, safety and support teams for the care they showed students and families at all three schools."

Trice said he visited Carrboro High School to check on the students and staff who remained at the school before dismissal.

"On the way, I saw backpacks and other belongings left behind when students ran for safety," Trice wrote. "Make no mistake, this was a harrowing experience for everyone involved.

"Moving forward, please know we will do all we can to provide the necessary counseling and support for students and staff."
