Cape Fear Valley Health cuts nearly 200 positions

Cape Fear Valley Health announced Wednesday that it's reducing its workforce by approximately 200 positions, including 138 currently filled jobs.

The health system said the decision was driven by declining federal reimbursements, rising healthcare costs and financial uncertainty.

“These are difficult decisions, and they are never made lightly. They impact colleagues who have contributed so much to our patients and to our mission. However, these decisions reflect the challenging environment facing healthcare organizations across the country,” said Dan Weatherly, Chief Executive Officer at Cape Fear Valley Health. 

Hospital leaders said they had already implemented other cost-saving measures before announcing the workforce reduction.

Cape Fear Valley Health said eligible employees will receive separation packages or be considered for placement in other positions within the organization.

The health system said the cuts are part of a broader effort to ensure its long-term operational and financial stability while protecting frontline and direct patient care services.
