911 call: Body found in Cumberland County pond had 'no legs or arms'

A 911 call obtained by WRAL News details a caller's alarming description of a body found in a Cumberland County pond in February. 

On Feb. 26, Sky 5 flew overhead as crews searched a pond in the 4000 block of Gainey Road. At the same time, they searched a nearby property belonging to Clinton “Clint” Bonnell, a Green Beret reported missing on Jan. 30.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said a body was found in the pond a day earlier and sent to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification. The body has not yet been identified.

In a 911 call made Feb. 25, a caller says, "It looks like there might be part of a body floating out in the water ... I just got here about 10 minutes ago, [I was] just looking around and seen it."

The caller said the body was dismembered. 

"It looks like it's been there a while, there’s no legs or arms on it or nothing on it ... it's in the middle of nowhere," the caller described.

The pond is located 5 miles from Bonnell's home. The Green Beret was last seen on Jan. 27 in the Gray's Creek area, according to the sheriff's office.

The body found in the pond has not been tied to Bonnell, and the sheriff's office is awaiting identification from the medical examiner's office.

Family members said Bonnell, who was studying to become a physician's assistant at Methodist University, vanished under suspicious circumstances when he stopped showing up for classes.

Bonnell is described as a white man who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 195 pounds. He has short brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a plaid button-up shirt, a black hoodie and brown pants. He is known to work out at the gym Fit for Life on Owen Drive, according to the sheriff's office.
