A 2-year-old girl was injured and a police chief was shot in the leg during a shootout at an EP Mart in Scotland Neck Saturday.

At about 6:30 p.m., police received a call that a man was shot to death at 11th and Grace streets. That man was identified as Mack Moody. He was shot multiple times at point blank range, according to police.

When police began investigating the case, a suspect in the shooting, identified as Christopher Wardell Johnson, opened fire on the officers, authorities said.

Scotland Neck Police Chief Doug Pilgreen said he was one of the people Johnson shot at. Chief Joe Williams of nearby Hobgood Police Department, which was assisting, was shot in the leg, Pilgreen said.

Johnson went to the EP Mart and again opened fire on officers, according to Pilgreen. Police shot back and hit him multiple times. Johnson was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Sometime during the shooting, a 2-year-old girl sitting in a parked car outside the EP Mart was injured. The car she was in had multiple bullet holes, but officials could not confirm if she was shot or injured by broken glass. Pilgreen said she should be fine.

Johnson allegedly shot Moody to death "over a lady," according to Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier.
