Apex police arrest man accused of firing shots in home with kids inside after reported break-in

A man is in custody after a reported break-in led to police discovering a shooting had happened in an Apex home with children inside.

No one was hurt in the shooting.

Apex police said a man called 911 around 12:30 a.m. Monday believing someone was trying to break into his home. Police said the caller was unable to clearly verify his address, leading officers to check multiple homes near Sunflower Road for signs of a break-in.

As officers were searching the area, they heard two gunshots. They were able to narrow down the location to a home on Sunflower Road after hearing a third shot. Officers made their way inside the home fearing there was an immediate threat to life.

As of 7:45 a.m., police said they no longer believe anyone was trying to break into the home. Instead, they said they believe the man who called had taken drugs that contributed to his fear.

The man is accused of firing the gun while three kids were inside the home. Police said there was no longer any threat to the public.

"Preliminary findings indicate the renter of the home was the only individual who discharged a firearm during the incident. The renter was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Wake County Detention Center," the Apex Police Department said.

Wake County deputies and a medic unit were also requested to the scene. Several emergency response vehicles lined the street outside a townhome. At least one witness reported a person in handcuffs.
