An Amtrak train scheduled to travel from Orlando to New York with a stop in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is at a standstill in Florida, stranding passengers for hours.

According to Amtrak’s website, the track is closed because of a large brush fire. The company tells WRAL they are monitoring two wildfires near the Clay-Putnam County line in Florida.

The website states the train departed Orlando at 12:36 p.m. on Sunday, and it was scheduled to arrive at 11:47 p.m. in Fayetteville. 

Instead, as of 10:45 a.m. on Monday, those passengers said they are still stuck on the stopped train. 

Jordan Harrington is one of those passengers trying to get to Fayetteville.  

He told WRAL News that, after about two hours of travel, the train stopped just beyond Palatka, Florida, due to the fire. 

“They said it was a forest fire, and it was spreading over 300 acres, so the train couldn’t proceed forward,” Harrington said. “So basically, we’ve been stuck on the train.”

Harrington said the train reversed back to Palatka and dropped off some passengers, but it has since been at a standstill. 

“Everybody’s basically in distress,” Harrington said. “There’s people in here that got kids; I know there’s a lady that said she’s running out of formula, like she’s got one Pampers left.” 

Harrington said passengers on the train are “trauma bonding,” and he’s had to call out of work. 

“Once the hours started building, building, building, I’m distressed. I’m just ready to get home,” Harrington said. “We’re hungry and we’re tired, the seats are not comfortable at all.” 

Palatka is located in northeastern Florida, in Putnam County. News4Jax in Jacksonville, Florida, reports two fires near the Clay-Putnam County line are merging to create a fire burning more than 3,000 acres.

Amtrak says crews are working to get Train 98 back on the move to travel to Miami.

"Customers onboard have been provided snack packs, beverages, and food from the lounge car and when the train arrives in Orlando, passengers will be served pizza. Customers traveling on this train will also receive full refunds and Amtrak travel vouchers," a spokesperson wrote in a statement. 

Other trains have also been impacted due to the wildfires.

For Silver Meteor Trains 97 & 98, service will terminate and originate in Jacksonville. Train 97, scheduled to depart on Tuesday, has been canceled.

Floridian Trains 40 & 41 are also impacted. Train 40 will depart from Savannah on Monday, while Train 41, which departed Saturday, April 18th, will terminate in Savannah. Train 41 that was scheduled to depart on Tuesday has also been canceled.

Amtrak says bus service will be provided between Miami and Jacksonville for Silver Meteor and Floridian customers on Monday. 

Service is canceled for Monday for Auto Trains 52 & 53.
