11-year-old girl shot in Durham asks for help calling 911

An 11-year-old girl shot late Saturday night walked into the Durham Rescue Mission and asked for help calling 911.

Before 10:30 p.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to Morning Glory Avenue and Elm Street, where the child was found with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Police said she was a passenger in a car when she was shot, then walked into the Rescue Mission to ask for help. 

Surveillance video provided by the Rescue Mission shows a man and woman using a shirt to tie a tourniquet to the girl's leg.

Ernie Mills Jr., CEO of Durham Rescue Mission, said, "I’m so thankful our neighbors see the Durham Rescue Mission as a safe place of refuge. I’m incredibly proud of our clients who immediately jumped into action to help protect and render aid to the victims."
