NCAE planning May 1 march for school funding, reversal of legislative decisions

The North Carolina Association of Educators is planning a march in downtown Raleigh.

The march is set for Friday, May 1.

NCAE is inviting anyone to participate who wishes to, including teachers.

May 1 is a teacher workday for Wake County traditional calendar schools. It's not a workday in year-round schools, Durham and other counties.

It's the latest of several demonstrations organized by different groups. The demonstrations have called for more financial investment in public schools from state lawmakers. NCAE contends insufficient investment has resulted in "overcrowded classrooms, crumbling school buildings, rising healthcare costs, and educators leaving the classroom because of low pay."

They're also asking for lawmakers to reverse their own very recent decisions, requests unlikely to make much headway with General Assembly leadership. NCAE wants lawmakers to eliminate the recently expanded Opportunity Scholarship voucher programs, reverse recent corporate income tax cuts and reverse numerous other decisions lawmakers have made in recent years, including approval of electoral maps.

WRAL News reached out to legislative leadership about the march and NCAE's requests, but didn't immediately back.
