The scheduled July 1 transition from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus is on track for Wake County schools, though some features will temporarily shut off before then, system officials told the school board Tuesday.

Infinite Campus is replacing PowerSchool, which has recently been hit with hacks and threats, though state leaders opted for the change well before those incidents.

The new system stems from state legislation that required school business systems to modernize. That prompted the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to write new requirements for its statewide student information system and request companies to bid on the new service. PowerSchool re-bid but wasn't selected, and DPI chose Infinite Campus. The State Board of Education approved the contract in November 2023 and the first phase of schools began using it July 1, 2024. All schools, including Wake, will use it by this upcoming July 1.

Data from PowerSchool will be transferred to Infinite Campus on June 13, the district says. That includes data for all students that's been entered since schools began using PowerSchool in 2013.

The transition in Wake will require a few systems to briefly go offline later this summer, such as student transfers (from June 9-July 1) and student enrollment (June 13-July 1). PowerSchool access will be cut off June 26.

Many Wake staff have already been trained, and school-level staff are being trained from April through August.

The district's 20 digital learning coordinators are assisting in the training, though the school board is proposing to cut 10 of them come next school year as a part of several cost-cutting measures. Without them, the district still plans to have at least two employees at each school serve as a points of contact for troubleshooting on Infinite Campus when teachers and others need help.
