A new crash test gives you a better idea of how well a car will protect your family.

5 On Your Side has a look at the new heavier crash vehicle that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has started using for side crash tests.

The nonprofit organization said that added weight and testing at faster speeds give a more accurate look at how small cars hold up in a crash.

The Mazda 3 was the only small car to earn a "good" crash rating in this new test. The Mazda 3 was deemed a top safety pick for 2022.
