New round of stimulus checks not lessening frustration for some North Carolinians

The $600 stimulus payments are being distributed, but that doesn't cut the mustard for some North Carolinians.

Many North Carolinians are anxiously awaiting word of the second round of stimulus checks.

Creedmoor’s Willie Mae Duncan's bank account showed her $600 stimulus payment was there Wednesday morning. However, there was a catch.

“The lady at the bank said, ‘Yes, your money is here, and your daughter’s money is here, but it’s pending,’” Duncan said. “I go ‘So what do you mean? We can’t mess with the money?’ She said, ‘No, you can’t get it until (Jan.) 4th.’”

Duncan is thankful, but knows bills will have to wait a few days.

“The government…if they won’t get you one way, they’ll get you another,” Duncan exclaimed.

Duncan has direct deposit with the IRS, so she's one of the early stimulus recipients. Paper checks are being mailed this week or later.

The payments also come with income limitations; cutting off at $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples to get the full amount.

Dependents under 17 years old also mean an extra $600 for parents.

Sanford hairstylist Annette Holcomb fell months behind on rent and other bills when she lost her job early in the pandemic. Business is still off 50%.

“I’ve been at work as often as they’ll let me work,” Holcomb said. “I didn’t decide to take this vacation.”

Holcomb scoffed at the idea that $600 is a worthy sum to help the average struggling American.

“It’s ridiculous,” Holcomb said. “I think it’s great that they’re finally trying to take care of us, but what is $600, really?”

Duncan agrees – and will be happy when 2020 ends.

“I appreciate the $600, but we could use more," Duncan said. "A lot more.”
