HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — A new hospital broke ground in Holly Springs on Thursday.

UNC Rex Healthcare is building the 50-bed hospital on Avent Ferry Road to serve the growing population in Holly Springs and southern Wake County. It will have an emergency department, labor delivery, operating rooms and inpatient beds.

The hospital, which will have an emergency department, labor delivery, operating rooms and inpatient beds, speaks to the soaring growth in this part of Wake County.

"The rapid growth that you have experienced I got to experience driving down here today," Dr. Wesley Burks, the CEO of UNC Healthcare, said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

"[You experience] the new developments, the new roads and the traffic much more than I do. Our commitment to you is to have quality, affordable health care that is close to home. This is just the beginning of that experience."

Holly Springs Hospital is set to open in 2021.

In November, UNC Rex Healthcare announced a $65 million project to build a cancer center adjacent to the main Raleigh hospital at the corner of Blue Ridge and Macon Pond roads. The cancer center should open in late 2020.
