New Election Expected After Ballot Mix-Up
A Clayton Town Council candidate said Tuesday he plans to seek a new election after a mix-up last week led to some Johnston County residents voting in Clayton races.
Posted — UpdatedR.S. "Butch" Lawter Jr. said he would file an election protest before the Thursday deadline. The State Board of Elections would have to call for a new election.
About 20 voters who live outside Clayton were mistakenly given Clayton ballots at one polling place in the Nov. 6 election.
Incumbent Alex Harding finished with 527 votes, but the second- and third-place finishers in the race, Art Holder and Lawter, were separated by only three votes – 516 to 513 – after provisional ballots were counted.
