RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is pushing back the fall football season.

Kickoff is scheduled for February 2021 because of coronavirus.

There are a lot of logistics that have to be worked out.

It’s a Hail Mary to save the football season by pushing it back six months.

"[I'm] super bummed because I had really big plans this year. I was looking forward to making a big splash my senior year," said Jaylen Mitchell, a wide receiver at Chapel Hill Senior High School.

Mitchell will now have to wait until February to line up.

Jaylen’s mother, Crystal, shared her thoughts on the delay.

“I understand how important it is for him to play, but I also understand it is imperative for him to be safe. I knew we couldn’t start immediately. If we can get this under control, I would feel better about him playing," she said.

The season will have some new challenges to iron out.

Some coaches will run into conflicts because they coach multiple sports.

Football powerhouse Wake Forest High School also will have to find somewhere to play when the season starts.

“First adjustment we will have to make, we are not going to have a stadium. We are doing some renovations starting late fall, in November, that was planned anyway," said Mike Joyner, the Wake Forest High athletic director.

Local sports leaders admitted this wasn't an easy decision.

“I can assure you the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has made the best out of an extremely difficult situation. I think they’ve done a remarkable job," said Scott DuPree, the executive director of the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance.

Details such as how the post-season will play out still have to be worked out.
