Neighbors shocked and appalled after finding out Granville County man was sex crimes suspect

Renuart had a criminal record that dated to 1986 and included multiple charges of sexual offenses against minors, including charges as recently as last spring.

Jennifer Reeves said she had no idea a man accused of producing child pornography lived right down the road from her.

"The events yesterday were pretty appalling," she said.

Reeves and her daughter live a short distance away Renuart.

"To think that her playing out in the yard ... that there is a pedophile across the street is scary," said Reeves.

On Tuesday, agents with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Granville County Sheriff's Office went to execute search and arrest warrants at the suspect's home off of Canady Mill Road.

Renuart then barricaded himself inside, resulting in an 18-hour standoff. When he finally emerged, he was carrying a long gun. That's when authorities said an SBI agent shot and killed him.

"It doesn't surprise me [that it ended this way]. I've been involved in this for almost 40 years now and these people are usually very desperate and they fear going to prison," said Chris Swecker, a retired assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I think there's more to the story than the public knows right now," said Reeves, adding that she's grateful her daughter wasn't a victim in the case.

Reeves said she wished that law enforcement had alerted her sooner about the situation.
