While battling a brain tumor, 15-year-old Cole Medcoff decided to buy an old classic car and fix it up. Just when the project seemed to be too daunting, a family friend stepped in to make Cole's dream come true.

I just kept looking on Craigslist on Facebook for something that I could drive I could work on. He found this classic beauty, but it needed a lot of work. We saw the car on the side of the road, and and cold was just like his dad. That's it. I've gotta have it. That's that's the car. 15 year old Cole thought it would be the perfect distraction after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was a long string of just seeing doctor after Doctor. The chemo last a few months last, probably four months is really starting to get to him. He stays strong for myself and for his mother and for the other little kids and everybody around him and just seeing, you know, the pain and everything that he goes through with. This is really tough that as a parent, you know you want toe, fix everything and take care of it. Take away the pain, you know, kiss the boo boo and you can. That's where Scott Reynolds, here at Herald's Auto body comes in. Oh, geez, you know what? What do you do when you find that out? You know, when your best buddy son has a brain tumor? He wanted to help fix up the car for coal. You know, we don't have the funding toe really make this happen. I said, Let's go to make a wish. You know what? You having a brain tumor? They'll help us. I know they'll help us and he said, I'm not gonna do it, Okay, I kind of let it go. He's not one to take charities is very selfless. And he said, Um, every every week I go to chemo and I see these little kids with tubes plugged into him and no hair and they're throwing up and they're sick and their families have to suffer with him And he said, I don't need a car. Those kids need to go to Disneyland. They need to go to Hawaii. They need their wish worse than I need a car. Reynolds had an idea I got with Mark. The shop owner made some key calls to people in town. No mas Tech Automotive Am co all the big players in town Can we do this? We all had a big meeting and said, Yeah, we can do this. My dad walks in and says, Hey, so I, uh I talked to Scott. Looks like he's picking up your card more. Yeah, yeah, they're gonna do like a full restoration on it. Wow. Next thing you know, they're tearing it apart and the engines going one way and the transmission's going Another bodies here on the frames over there. Complete restoration. Custom Hot rod build. We started in February. We originally we're gonna have it done in June. And with Cove it that's really slowed us down. My guys around here have just been amazing. Thousands and thousands of hours and sacrifice. You know, how often do you really get the chance to change somebody's life? He says. People have donated from all over the country, and it's all for coal. You don't see a kid that selfless anymore, and I see him, you know, go to chemo. What a way to spend a summer chemotherapy. That's horrible. And he's never asked for anything. He's never asked for anything special. No special treatment. Hell, if I could give him a dream and make him feel a little better and forget about this tumor, that's that's what I'm here for.

AJ tells WRAL about his fundraising efforts to feed hungry families during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has raised enough money for 1.5 tons of food for families in Harnett County.

So let's just start with I heard that you before you even did this cove in 19 stuff you actually were Instead of getting birthday presents having donations go to this  Yes I have been donating Yes I have done that I've been doing that since fourth grade Now Probably continue to do it Wow Fourth grade So how old were you in fourth grade Um I fluke Like eight or 909 in your in your 12 knots People get for three years Yeah that's a lot of birthday presents you could have got How do you feel about that Why did you decide Instead my mom had the idea and she donates to the food kennel Um like with dog food and stuff for her birthday  Oh that's awesome So it runs in the family Um uh what made you decide on the suit pantry on the food country rapidly Because um right now or when I was in fourth grade uh let's start with when you were in fourth grade What made you choose Tuesday It was one of the nearest one's to me I um Plus it was 19 cents a pound That was pretty You Um Yeah So it makes a big impact because even if it is a really long way Yeah Do you remember how what you've raised on your previous birthdays Or I think it's like when I turned 12 and I think it was like $50 was in fourth grade No que £70 Yeah So I stepped pounds worth of food in $50 That's amazing So like some family several families got to eat for your birthday Yeah How does that make you feel I'm happy I guess  Proud Yeah would it should make you brown I saw the video where you did the math and you found out how many pounds of food the money you had raised amounted to right now we have raised we're gonna raise over 2.5 tons That's what we go to the food bank Oh come on Monday one That's That's a lot That's like the weight of a car you donated like a car's worth of food Yep that's amazing Have you seen any of the numbers of how much more need they have now that we've got the Corona virus pandemic going on or No I haven't Yes So then need went up Almost 40% is again So like they had to serve hundreds more people starting in March when the pandemic began So the need is is even greater That that that's why this is It is so amazing what you're doing Because there's that intense need and they don't They don't just have the food to just automatic feed those people  Uh what What made you decide to do this Fundraiser  This isn't your birthday either Um we were gonna do titling before the pandemic but since pandemic came around um we thought Why not donate all the money to the food bank I was already a donator there so went out Yeah Yeah I heard that It started maybe with a math project What What was this project Um I wouldn't have the projects Um it was more for fun I guess because I would like tie dying a lot Um I did a summer camps a lot That was fun That was Why not do it at home Yeah that's cool So I've seen some of your stuff You've got a huge variety of tie dye stuff now right It's more than just sure Yeah it's more than issues We got bags String bags were starting to do regular paper grocery bags  Um we're gonna maybe start to do socks and maybe we're going to start to do jackets like this one  Oh my Yeah I love your jacket Did you buy that Um this I got this I didn't make that This one I got it Um like mid fall I think um I didn't make this one of my friends got it for me I guess Have you always been a tie dye fan than um yes I have you I actually used to teach at summer camps And I remember teaching the kids Yeah One project I wasn't ever very good at it My tight I they didn't look very Yeah yeah Yeah Like yeah How many How many tight I shirts or total creations Do you think you've made so far Um of Canton Maybe Like something shirts I don't know How many bags Yeah that's a lot over We're also trying to make some bad Dana's Yeah Have you made any yet Um yeah we have We've made a whole batch of them Oh I would totally buy a bandanna I have a son left over I love a tight I band And where should people buy this stuff How did they get in touch with you To purchase arm on Facebook  I have a Facebook page for So they go to your Facebook page and they Did they send you a message or Yeah I think so Yeah Yeah Okay so So they sent me a message of remember question and we like put it on a graph And then we just caught on Earless and then we do it That's cool OK I want to know because when we put the story up I'm sure people are gonna want to know where they can get one I hope we don't overload you I'm a little less than 50 at a time Oh wow Okay that's a lot No not for day Perlich Batch or something We try to be five shirts per day but sometimes it turns out 10 shirts per day with the tone  That's a lot Is it helping fill the time though That you're kind of stuck at home Yeah kind of What other stuff were you doing while you're home during the problem I What else are you doing for my cousin Rock scene D C And like a lot We've been playing on set a lot in March Naval Oh you said you're playing Did you say you're playing online Yeah with five cousins  Oh like is it a game What game Replying or my mind Crap No no I've been playing animal crossing so I e you Um that's cool And so um a j Have you seen any other kids doing anything like this doing fundraisers for non profits or I have I don't I knew it up Mom  I imagine there is though Yeah Yeah What about Look at your school on my school one  I think we did a coat drive one time in my school It wasn't too big Very cool What makes you care so much about helping people who don't have access to food Um you give them food I got Really It's a good feeling you makes you really proud of yourself Yeah Is that why you do it Because it feels so good Yeah Yeah does Plus you're feeding hungry families Yeah Yeah Exactly I mean I think What would you say to somebody who's maybe thinking about helping out But they haven't done it yet What would you tell them Um starting out It's a lot of hard work but once you get used to it it's pretty fun It doesn't get easier It just gets more fun You could just what I love that That's a really good quote That's awesome And um I wanted to ask I saw you had some other news coverage How are you feeling about all of this news Attention from I have no idea What a little bit It's a lot when you first get into It s really nerve wracking Yeah Did you expect to get attention like this Um no I really didn't Wow Well it's I know that it can cost some anxiety but it is It's because you're doing something that right now Ah lot of people are scared or sad or angry And when they see someone drink something really good urine especially a young person I think it really will help people feel more hopeful So you're doing more than just feeding people who are hungry You're also feeding these other people who are needing some hope and I think I'm getting in that too So is there anything else important that you wanted to make sure that I knew for this story Um no  No special in Okay And how does your mom feel about this Um she's really happy else meal She doesn't really need to do on myself but she likes helping out with a I'm sure she does It's a fun way Um where can I see your T shirt creations Are they on your Facebook page Um yes they are We have pictures of them I want to see some of them Do you have a favorite color combination that you do That's tough I would say whatever most requested ones or ramble swirls  It's a mix of red yellow and turquoise or light blue That looks really cool That does some cool Yeah I'm gonna have to take a look at them when people order Do they just They just tell you what colors they want Yeah that detective what problems they want if they want Like a swirl like the one that goes in a spiral Taken Ask for a crumple It looks like water Basically no and a bull's eye I think I think the one that looks like water That sounds really cool Yeah that was a little clock but it's a lot of time Yeah for sure We have a few more We types looking good Yeah And And you're expanding which I think is really good because there are people who would rather have maybe like a Danna or I think socks would definitely be a good way to go Yeah Roxanne tied I socks Well I'm gonna
