FAIR OAKS, CALIF. — A 92-year-old disabled man is thankful for the quick actions of a neighbor who went above and beyond.

When Harold Kaler's home in Fair Oaks, California, caught on fire, he was left with no way out. Kaler was just feet away from the fire that started in his garage.

He was resting in an electric recliner at the time, but the power outage caused by the fire meant Harold would struggle to get up. The ramp in his garage he uses was in flames as well.

"I would have just sat there," Kaler said. "I couldn't get out of the chair."

That's when Erik Bean sprung into action. The door was unlocked, meaning Bean could get in and help.

"The door itself to the garage was glowing red," Bean said. "So I just came over, and helped him get out of his recliner, grabbed his walker and then we proceeded out of the house."

The fire department arrived to extinguish the blaze, but Bean's contributions are leading some to call him a hero.

"I think that's very kind, but very overstated," Bean said. "It was just the right thing to do. Now that I have a little time to reflect on it, I did put myself in personal harm or harm's way, but I would do it again."
