Need to block the noise? Some good headphones can help

RALEIGH, N.C. — The kids are home for the summer in many households, so maybe you need some quiet while working. Or maybe you’re back at work, and everyone is so loud!

Noise canceling headphones could help.

“I use mine on flights to drown out background noise and get work done,” said Derek Flowers.

Consumer Reports says a decent pair of headphones can make all the difference.

“As long as they form a tight seal in or around your ears, noise-canceling headphones can help block out any outside sound but they really work best with low-pitched, consistent noises, like the roar of a plane engine,” said Thomas Germain with Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports likes the over-the-ear, budget-friendly headphones from SoundCore by Anker.

Testers say they’re excellent at reducing noise and the sound is good.

If you prefer a pair that lets you remain aware of what’s around you, some new technology can help.

“Models with variable noise cancellation let you adjust how much sound you block. Or you can get a pair with a ‘monitor’ or a ‘transparency’ mode which actually amplifies outside sound on purpose,” said Germain.

An option to consider: the Cleer Ally Plus with monitor mode.

Of course, picking the right headphones involves a lot of personal preference.

And for noise-canceling tech to work great, Consumer Reports says it’s critical to get a pair that fits you right, so check the return policy before you buy.
