NCSU police search office of former women's basketball staffer

By Friday, Murray was no longer on staff at State.

Fred Demarest, senior associate athletic director for communications, told WRAL News simply, "Mike is no longer on our staff."

According to a search warrant executed Feb. 16, campus police were alerted to the possibility of missing money after an internal audit.

Police reviewed receipts for cash submitted by Murray. In his role, Murray would be given cash to use for team meals, tips for service providers, baggage fees and other payments, the warrant said. He would then collect signed receipts as he doled out the money.

The audit was triggered when a bus driver, worried she was not performing up to standard, asked about tips she should have received from Murray. According to the warrant, the bus driver talked to campus police and identified documents delivered by Murray with her signature that she claimed she did not sign.

Other paperwork submitted by Murray appeared "to have been color copied and altered," Det. Kaylla McNeill wrote in asking for Murray's office to be searched.

McNeill asked officers to look for financial records linked to Murray or to the women's basketball team. They seized a safe, a binder of travel documentation from the current basketball season and records and receipts dating back to October 2013.

Murray, 2003 graduate of Appalachian State, joined the Wolfpack in April 2013.

"It is estimated that Murray has embezzled at least $1,070 from NC State University Athletics," McNeill wrote.
