An official with the N.C. Department of Transportation said further actions will be taken after a vehicle crashed after driving down a road that was marked numerous times that it was closed.

Three people were injured after a pickup truck crashed Monday night into a hole in a road on Mitchell Mill Road near Bad News Drive near Rolesville. The hole was caused by storms in June.

Rolesville Fire Chief Rodney Privette said the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. The driver and passenger were injured and found lying in shallow water in Penny Hill Lake.

One person was taken to the UNC burn unit while another was sent to WakeMed. A third person, who was driving behind the truck in another vehicle, was also taken to the hospital after she tried to help rescue the people in the truck.

There are several warning signs warning on both ends of the hazard. The drivers of both vehicles evidently went around two "Road Closed" signs blocking the road then drove into the washed out area.

"It's not like I am going to say it's their fault, but there are two different road closed signs, and if they drove around it, then what were they doing doing there?" said Mary Raybon, a resident who lives nearby. "I think that they put up signs for a reason and people should really pay attention to them."

Privette asked the DOT to come out and put up additional signage as a precaution. The DOT spokesman said they will be laying down stones on the road in an effort to slow down drivers who may have missed or ignored the multiple warning signs.

The Highway Patrol has not released the names or conditions of the people involved in the crash.
