NCDOT contractor hit, killed on I-295 near Fort Liberty

A contracted employee for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was hit and killed Tuesday morning on Interstate 295 near Fort Liberty.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A contracted employee for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was hit and killed Tuesday morning on Interstate 295.

The employee was hit by a vehicle while picking up litter along I-295 near the Murchison Road interchange.

The crash happened near Fort Liberty. NCDOT said Fort Liberty military police are investigating the crash.

The employee was contracted through Lovin Contracting Company in Robbinsville, according to NCDOT.

The cause of the crash is not known at this time.

An investigation is underway.

Fort Liberty released a statement on the death of the NCDOT worker.

“We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends who lost their loved one and those involved in the incident,” said Col. John Wilcox, Fort Liberty garrison commander. “As a military institution serving the community, we have a responsibility to protect and serve.

"We are doing everything we can to support the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division as they continue in the preliminary stages of the investigation.”
